Last night marked the begining of Choice Cuts – Beck’s Rhythm Weekender the lads curated a free exhibition of the works of Mati Klarwein in Filmbase, Temple Bar. Free beer, free wine and a very cool collection of pics, not to mention a superb selection of tunes by CC homeboy Fruitman created what appeared to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all in attendance. If you are around Temple bar in the next few week pop in and check out the other wordly works of Klarwein. His works have graced the sleeves of some of the coolest records in existence as well as inspired a whole genre of psychedelic art.

So let us give you the lowdown…
The Beck’s Vier Rhythm Weekender kicks off on Sunday, 14th October with what promises to be a feast for your eyes. For the first time in Ireland, Filmbase (a stone’s throw from the BVRW2012 hub, Meeting House Square) will be exclusively exhibiting the work of renowned artist, the late Mati Klarwein. Curated by Klarwein’s son Balthazar, this exhibition will feature some of the art for which Klarwein is best known, having worked on album covers for the likes of Buddy Miles, Leonard Bernstein, Santana and most famously on Miles Davis’ records Bitches Brew and Live-Evil. Klarwein’s work on Bitches Brew was recently voted as one of the Greatest Album Covers of All Time in The Guardian. A peer of Timothy Leary and Jimi Hendrix, Klarwein also completed the artwork for the By Any Means Necessary LP, the definitive audio collection of Malcolm X’s most famous public speeches. Get down to Filmbase for a serious visual treat!
Swinging our attention over to Meeting House Square, Hip-hop icons De La Soul bring their new venture First Serve to the stage on Thursday, October 18th. First Serve lives up to the trio’s legacy and is a show that is going to be a stormer, guaranteed. Also known for their vocal performances with the stellar supergroup Gorillaz, First Serve will be joined by a full live band, appearing in Ireland for the very first time! Also featuring on this triple bill are Rejjie Snow (formerly Lecs Luther), Dublin rapper who is making waves both here and abroad AND acclaimed French beat maker and producer extraordinaire, Onra.
Friday, October 19th dishes up the groove laden sounds of Nicole Willis and The Soul Investigators, Hot 8 Brass Band and The North Strand Klezmer Band. Brooklyn-born Nicole Willis has worked with Curtis Mayfield, Leftfield, and also Mo’ Wax and is a playlist favourite ofBarack Obama. She joined Finish funk group The Soul Investigators in 2005 and this show will mark their second ever appearance in Ireland – their first show being a jam-packed sold out show in The Spiegeltent in 2007. This very special show will serve as a debut to tracks from their eagerly awaited forthcoming album. Hot 8 Brass Band hail from New Orleans, where their boundless energy and incredible grooves have seen them being featured on CNN, Nightline, in the New York Times and most notably in Spike Lee’s Katrina documentary ‘When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts’ and the critically acclaimed TV series Treme. The band will be showcasing tunes from their brand new album plus treating you to songs that have proven to be favourites at their live shows! The Irish Times hailed The North Strand Klezmer Band as ‘one of the most enjoyable new party bands of the past few years’ and we agree. Their high energy shows and faultless musicianship will not disappoint!
How do you match that, eh? Well, for Saturday, October 20th how’s about an 8- piece, Chicago-based brass ensemble? From selling out the Sydney Opera House, rocking out at the WOMAD and being the very first brass band ever to perform on legendary TV show Later With Jools Holland, these gents will put on a show to remember. Both Prince andDamon Albarn number among the ranks of die hard Hypnotic fans. The band have collaborated with Prince and they feature in all of Albarn’s musical side-projects. They’ve hit the celluloid realm recently, too, featuring in the new Jimi Hendrix biopic ‘All Is By My Side’. Visuals for the show will be orchestrated by Donal Thornton (practice&Theory) and Balthazar Klarwein, this is performance art at its most unique.
Also appearing on the night are the amazing Dublin Afrobeat Ensemble, a 12- piece musical force who draw deep on the influence of the pioneers and modern- day Afrobeat heavyweights.
